Fort Independence will open for tours for the 2010 season on Saturday, May 29.

The terrific, all volunteer organization the Castle Island Association (CIA), offers free tours of Fort Independence in partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). Please see their website for a complete schedule and details: www.bostonfortindependence.com

Fort Independence Openings (Weather Permitting)

Starting Memorial Day weekend, May 29, volunteers offer free tours from 12 noon until 3:30 p.m.:

  • Saturdays and Sundays in June, July and August
  • Twilight Skyline Viewing, self guided, every Thursday evening from 7:00 p.m. to dusk in June, July and August
  • Sundays only in September and October
  • Mondays only on Memorial Day, Labor Day and Columbus Day

The last guided tour each day begins at 3:30. There is no admittance to the Fort after the last guided tour starts. Fort Independence is handicap accessible only on the first level. Guided tours are the ONLY way you can walk around inside and on top of the Fort, except for Twilight Skyline Viewing. The fort is closed to the public on Saturday, July 10 and Sunday, July 25. The annual ‘Children’s Magical Halloween Castle’ free Halloween extravaganza is on October 23 and 24.
